“The Grapes of Wrath” is a fresh single by Russian avant-garde music band Shortparis. The song reveals the imaginary protest against the system, criticises conformism, and reflects on Shortparis’ own path. Since the song is very expressive, angry, and even hysterical, for my meter-long scroll I used a sharp, prickly variation of vyaz (cyrillic calligraphy, where letters merge in a continuous ornamental strip), which reflects the expressiveness of the text and sound.
During the calligraphy course at uni we went through four historical handwritings (antiqua sans serif based on Roman Capitals, italic type, blackletter, Pomorian vyaz) and tried to write small phrases with them. For this exercise I chose lines from four different songs by Shortparis.
And these are my small experiments with different calligraphy tools and gilding.
